Historic Preservation Awards Winners
Linda
Howey, Chair of West Hartford's Fourth Annual Preservation Awards
Program,
was pleased to announce that nine properties were honored during National
Historic Preservation Week at a Town Hall ceremony on May 15, 2001.
Town councilwoman
Liz Gillette presented the awards as winners were introduced by Mary
Donahue, Chair of the West Hartford District Commission.
The Awards
Jury included Don Foster, Wendell Stephenson, Mark Tamaccio, and Vivian
Zoe, as well as commission members. The West Hartford Historic District
Commission is the town body which works to protect and preserve the architectural
integrity and character of three town-designated districts including the
Buena Vista Historic District, the Boulevard-Raymond Road Historic District,
and the West Hill Historic District, as well as eight individual properties
composed of eighteenth and early nineteenth century farmhouses.

Carol Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities at
Saint Joseph College

An
addition was designed to merge modern funtion with the historic
architectual character of the building. the original 1936 plans
for the center were postponed because of the Depression, and
the recent overhaul allowed them to finally come to fruition.

The
home of Bonnie and Barry Waluda in the Raymond Road Historic
District, is a Colonial Revival and was renovated to reflect
its history, including the removal of inappropriate wrought iron
railings from porches and the addition of wooden balustrades.

The
owners built a new front proch on the Colonial Revival home while
following zoning regulations that restored the veranda line.

The
landscaping includes numerous original flowerbeds, specimen trees
and unusual flowering shrubs dating to the construction of the
1916 Colonial Revival home. For example, the owners have maintained
the 15-foot, 80 year-old Rhododendron maxima and other year round
plantings.

The
multi-family home underwent a precise restoration with new supports,
restored columns, simple lighting fixtures and varnished tongue-in-groove
fixtures to preserve the original character.

buying the home, they took on the arduous task of removing the siding
when they found old holiday invitations that pictured the home as it
appeared in 1926. |
