Historic Preservation Award Recipients - 2004

41 West Hill Drive
Andrew and Kathi Packer

The elegance of this Georgian style home located in the West Hill Historic District is enhanced by a complementary landscape design thanks to the creative efforts of the Packers. The new bluestone patio matches the original front walkway and is bordered by salvaged original curbstone from an earlier West Hill Drive street resurfacing project. The jurors applauded the owners for this imaginative recycling plan! Old plantings were relocated and new ones, such as a weeping cherry tree, were selected to echo other shrubs and trees on the property. What was an awkward public area is now a beautiful, private family retreat in the midst of one of West Hartford's high style neighborhoods of the 1920's.

The awards jury included Chris Dobbs, Richard Hughes, Mila Limson, Elizabeth Normen, and Wendell Stephenson. The West Hartford Historic District Commission is the town body that works to protect and preserve the architectural integrity and character of the three town-designated districts including the Buena Vista Historic District, The Boulevard-Raymond Road Historic District, and the West Hill Historic District, as well as eight individual properties composed of eighteenth and early nineteenth century farmhouses.
