Bulky and Metal item waste collection refers to the removal of large items (non-metal and metal) that will not fit into a standard household garbage container. When scheduled, these items are collected from residences on their regularly scheduled trash day.

Multi-family units (apartment dwellings, multi-family homes with four or more units, and condominiums with private trash collection with private trash collection) and mixed use properties (business on the first floor and residence on the upper floors) are not eligible for Town of West Hartford collection services. Residents and tenants of these properties should schedule these services with the trash hauler that services these properties.

The Town of West Hartford offers regular collection of bulky items to efficiently and conveniently remove sizable waste in order to keep our community safe and clean.

Purchasing a Permit:  

Metal and Bulky permits costs $20 each. Beginning July 2, 2008, all discarded appliances and white goods will require a $30 permit for each item. The maximum number of appliances that can be collected at one address during one week is three (3) appliances. This is in addition to the limit of a maximum of two (non-appliance) bulky and/or metal permits per address, per week. The following would be acceptable combinations of permits for one address for any given week:

(1) bulky permit; (1) metal permit and up to (3) appliance permits

(2) bulky permits and up to (3) appliance permits

(2) metal permits and up to (3) appliance permits

You must obtain a separate permit for bulky and metal items since items are collected and disposed of separately. The total volume of bulky and metal items for one collection day cannot be greater than three (3) cubic yards (the size of a reasonably loaded standard size pick-up truck). Please plan accordingly. Permits must be purchased by 2PM the day before your regular refuse collection. Monday collection must be purchased before 2PM on Friday. Bulky collections must be at the curb by 6:00AM on your regular refuse collection day. Depending on the number of bulky collection stops, the trash hauler may pick up your items a day after your trash pick-up.

  • Permits are available with one phone call by contacting Paine's at 658-9481
  • If necessary, permits can be obtained online at the West Hartford website or in person at the Public Works Department or the Customer Service desk in the lobby of Town Hall during business hours Monday through Friday. Cash and check are accepted in person. 
  • If purchasing permits online or in person, you must also remember to call Paine's to schedule pickup before 2PM at least one day before your refuse collection. Permits purchased directly through Paine's do not require a second call. 

Permits are non-refundable, non-transferable, and valid for two weeks from date of issue.  There will be no refunds for collections that are scavenged.
