The Town of West Hartford has instituted an operational permit process and fee schedule for occupancies under the jurisdiction of the Fire Marshal's Office. Section §87-5 through §87-8 of the West Hartford Code of Ordinances was adopted in July 2009.
This permit fee is based upon the size of your space or building and the expiration date of the permit. Permits are classified by occupancy and operations use (see §87-6C). The permit will indicate the occupancy use classification which is referenced in the Occupancy Permit Fee Table of the ordinance. For example, if your business is a 1,500 square foot real estate office, the permit is issued every 3 years for a fee of $60.00 based on Occupancy Group 3. If you own a 5,000 square foot restaurant, the permit is issued annually at a cost of $95.00 as indicated in Occupancy Group 1.
This ordinance also applies to residential properties. Occupancy Group 1 of the ordinance refers to residential occupancies and the fees required by the overall square feet of the property.
Additional permits may be required for operational features that present more of a fire-related concern. For example, if your store sells consumer fireworks and sparklers, an additional permit is required at the cost of $150.00 per year.
