Nutritional Services
West Hartford offers a variety of nutritional services for residents. You will find detailed information for each program below.
Food Pantry The Division of Human Services maintains a large food pantry. It depends on donations of food from our community - individuals, families, neighborhoods, schools and businesses - and provides nutritious food in times of need. For information regarding the use of our food pantry, please call our office at (860) 561-7561.
Foodshare Mobile Van The West Hartford Food Pantry also partners with Foodshare to provide residents with fresh produce once a month.
One of the most successful programs Foodshare has embarked upon in recent years is the rapid delivery program. Mobile Foodshare takes perishable food items such as highly nutritious fruits and vegetables to people in low income neighborhoods who need it most. By working with a network of sponsoring agencies that provide neighborhood sites and the volunteers to manage them, they provided over 2.6 million pounds of produce in 2009.
Mobile Foodshare currently operates 57 sites in 19 towns: Avon, Bloomfield, Bristol, East Hartford, Enfield, Farmington, Glastonbury, Hartford, Hebron, Manchester, New Britain, Newington, Plainville, Rockville/Vernon, Southington, Stafford, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Willington.
“The new truck has refrigerated compartments. We now have a way to deliver meats, yogurts, ice cream and other dairy items. It is a great addition,” raves George Lombardo, Community Programs Coordinator at Foodshare.

SNAP - Food Stamps The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps, is a Connecticut Department of Social Services program that helps low-income individuals and families afford the cost of food at grocery stores and farmers’ markets. Volunteers are available at our office by appointment to take applications. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment or would like more information, please call (860) 561-7561.
