Who,Where & How do West Hartford residents recycle their electronics?

• The Town of West Hartford has partnered with RMG Industries of Londonderry, N.H and Green Monster E – Cycling of West Hartford .

• Green Monster, a West Hartford based electronics recycler is located at 150 Brook Street off of Newington Road heading south past the Stop & Shop Plaza .

• Residents will be assisted at the Green Monster facility with the disposal of their electronics.

Green Monster’s facility is open for electronic disposal 6 days a week year round. Their operating hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm and Saturdays from 8 am until 12 noon.

Added recycling opportunities:

• RMG and Green Monster have expanded the recycling opportunities to many other items beyond the required CED’s free of charge to residents. Basically they will accept any device with a cord for recycling including items residents must currently pay to have collected at their curb.  Refrigerator's, air conditioners, dehumidifiers or any other device that contains Freon are not accepted at this time.

For more info go to greenmonsterrecycling.com or call (860) 231-1426.

Why these devices?

• All of these items are manufactured with a certain degree of hazardous or toxic materials.

• To prevent the toxins from being released either into ground water when land filled or into the atmosphere when incinerated.

Electronic waste generated in the U.S. is growing which is unnecessarily overflowing landfills.

Who is required to recycle these items?

• All individuals , businesses and local, state and federal government agencies.

Who pays the cost to recycle residentially generated CED’s?

• A recycling product stewardship program has been instituted in Connecticut and several other states which require manufacturers of these devices bear the cost of recycling and final disposal.

• Manufactures contract with regional recyclers approved by the State of CT to collect, sort and record CED’s for distribution to recycling facilities.

• West Hartford and other municipalities then contract with the approved recycler to facilitate collection in their community.

• West Hartford has no financial burden in the cost of recycling covered CED’s. In fact, we will save over $ 15,000 annually in tipping fees if we meet our target.

• This recycling program is only available to residentially generated electronics.

Is the recycling process environmentally sound and safe ?

• Recycling requires that all devices that can not be remanufactured be dismantled in an environmentally sound manner.

• All hard drives are either erased to Department of Defense standards, punched or shredded.

• RMG is currently in the process of becoming ISO14001, R2/RIOS, and e-Steward Certified which validates that their operation and organization recycles to the highest international standard. This certification guarantees that no materials are shipped and processed in unsafe conditions to third world countries.
