Historic Preservation Awards Program
The West Hartford Historic District Commission (“WHHDC” invites members of community to nominate potential recipients for the WHHDC’s annual Preservation Awards. Award winners will be recognized on at a ceremony in Town Hall (date/time to be determined). Awards will be given to homeowners, commercial property owners/developers, architectural firms, local governments, civic organizations, preservation project team members or individuals for efforts that have preserved and protected the architectural character of the Town of West Hartford. The WHHDC Preservation Awards have been given since 1998, honoring town residents who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to preservation.
Projects associated with nominations must have been completed between January 1, 2011 and March 20, 2012 and focus on the rehabilitation of structures at least 50 years old. Projects must be located within the Town of West Hartford. The ENTRY FORM must be received by April 25, 2012. In addition, please include no fewer than three (3) high resolution digital photographs of the project. NOMINATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED WITHOUT PHOTOGRAPHS. There are no entry fees to participate.
REQUIREMENTS: Projects should preserve the character of the building as originally designed. Architectural features of the building should be preserved or replaced by using materials that would have been found on the original structure. New additions should utilized materials that would have been found on the main/original structure.
AWARD CATEGORIES: (Choose One)
Outstanding Domestic Project
Presented to the owner, architect or contractor for a project that exemplifies a profound effort and sensitivity in preserving the exterior of the domestic residence (structure must be at least 50 years old).
Outstanding Commercial Project
Presented to the owner, architect or contractor/developer for a commercial structure that has been rescued from deterioration of the exterior and restored to a viable use residence (structure must be at least 50 years old).
Outstanding Adaptive Use
Presented to the owner, architect or contractor/developer for a preservation effort that has demonstrated creativity and sensitivity in adapting the exterior of a structure (structure must be at least 50 years old or located within a historic district) designed for one use into an appropriate alternative use, thus reinventing the use of a space while at the same time preserving the architectural integrity of the original architect or builder.
Outstanding Public Sector Preservation Project
Presented to the government entity, architect or contractor/developer for outstanding preservation of a publicly owned structure (structure must be at least 50 years old).
Outstanding Service in Community Preservation
Recognizes an activity or project that has made a significant contribution to an historic area in West Hartford. Examples would include an effort to save a critical structure, creation of a revolving fund, exceptional efforts by an individual or neighborhood association such as the establishment and maintenance of a newsletter or web site. If the nomination includes an achievement relating specifically to a construction project, photographs must be included. If it is a tangible, non-construction project, such as a newsletter, a copy or representative issue must be included with the nomination.
