Q. Where, when and how do I register my dog?

A. There is a state statute that requires residents to register their dogs. This registration may be done at the Town Clerk's office in Town Hall, Room 313. All dogs aged 6 months and older must be licensed. Proof of an updated rabies vaccination must accompany the registration. The fee is $6.00 per year for a dog that is spayed/neutered and $16.00 for a dog that is not. For further information call the Town Clerk's office at 523-3148 or the police department's Animal Control Division at 523-2018.

Q. How do I get fingerprints taken at the police department?

A. Fingerprints will be taken by the department for reasons of employment, green card or adoption purposes Monday through Saturday 9:00 am to 7:00 PM so long as a detective is available. We recommended coming at the following times: Monday through Saturdays, 10 am to noon. Wednesday nights from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM There is a $5 fee per card for this service. We cannot take fingerprints for citizenship or for naturalization purposes. These must be taken by INS.

Q. How do I become a West Hartford police officer?

A. Employment information is available through the town's Employee Services office; either in person or by calling 523-3220. There are several minimum qualifications: (1) applicants must attain the age of 21 years before being considered for appointment; (2) an Associates degree or equivalency (60 credit hours) at an accredited college or university; or four years active military experience; or certified police officer; (3) a valid driver's license and corresponding safe driving history, (4) requirement to reside within 30 minutes travel time of headquarters prior to completion of the probationary period; (5) must meet a physical fitness standard as required by POST; (6) certified nonsmoker; and (7) clear of any drug-related conviction, felony conviction, or conviction for any Class A or Class B misdemeanor.
