Marriage Licenses & Civil Unions If you are getting married or planning a civil ceremony in the town of West Hartford, you should apply for your license in the Town Clerk’s Office, third floor, town hall. The State allows people to apply for the licenses in either the town of the ceremony or the town in which they reside; however, it is still strongly recommended that the application take place in the town where the ceremony will occur. Both the bride and groom or couple planning a civil union must appear in person and bring a photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. Click here for Civil Union Fact Sheet. If you are applying for a marriage license in West Hartford because you are a town resident, but the marriage is not taking place here in West Hartford, in addition to your driver’s license, you must bring something verifying your West Hartford address, such a printed check, piece of cancelled mail, or utility bill. The fee for a marriage or civil union license is $30.00. If the bride is planning to change her last name, she may wish to order and pre-pay an additional $10.00 for each certified copy of the marriage license. A certified copy is required by social security and DMV to make a name change. People planning a name change as a result of a civil union are encouraged to do a legal name change through Probate Court, because it is unclear at this point whether those agencies will accept a certified copy of a civil union license. Please complete this Marriage Worksheet. Requests for certified copies of marriage or civil union licenses should include those parties’ names and date of event. Copies are available for $10.00 each. To request a certified copy by mail, please use the attached form. For further information, please call the Town Clerk’s Office at (860) 561-7430. |
