QUALIFICATIONS FOR VETERAN'S EXEMPTION

Requirement for Granting the Veteran's Exemption:

1.
Must be a resident of the Town in which the exemption is claimed.
2.
Must have served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or the Coast Guard of the United States 90 days or more during a time of war, or have a disability rating by the Veterans Administration of 10 percent or more.
3.
Veterans must have been honorably discharged and file the original or certified copy of their DD214 with the Town Clerk.
4.
World War II veterans of any nation signator to the United Nations Declaration of January 1, 1942, who participated in armed conflict, are eligible for exemption if they have been a U.S. citizen for ten years.

Requirements for Granting Veteran's Disability Exemptions:

1.
Must annually submit a statement from the Veteran's Administration showing the percentage of disability rating. The disability must be at least 10 percent. Exception: Annual proof of disability rating is not required when the veteran is over 65 years of age and has shown proof of age or the disability rating is 100 percent and permanent.
2.
Must be receiving a pension, annuity or compensation from the United States because of the loss in service of an arm or leg.
3.
The surviving spouse may receive the same amount of exemption the veteran was entitled to at the time of his/her death as long as such spouse remains unmarried.

Filing Period: Eligibility for exemption must be proved prior to the assessment date, October 1st.

Please note: An additional exemption may be provided if a veteran's income does not exceed $28,800 for a single person or $35,300 for a married couple. Applications must be submitted to the Assessor every other year between February 1st and October 1st.

Veterans with a 100 percent disability rating and an adjusted gross income of less than $21,000 for a married couple and $18,000 for a single person are entitled to an additional exemption.

Disabled veterans who have specifically equipped their vehicles for the purpose of adapting its use to their disability are eligible for a 50 percent assessment reduction on their vehicle. Annual filing is required between October 1st and November 1st.
