LOCAL EMERGENCY HAZARDOUS MATERIALS PLANNING COMMITTEE (LEPC)

The Town of West Hartford is a member of the Capitol Region Emergency Planning Committee. Information is provided to the public regarding hazardous materials safety. Hazardous materials site inspections are conducted by the Fire Department for compliance with federal and state regulations. The Fire Department coordinates efforts to control situations involving hazardous substances in a safe and expeditious manner. The State Department of Environment Protection is responsible for coordinating the ultimate clean up. For additional information call 561-8300.

Hazardous Waste Collection

The 2010 Metropolitan District Commission Hazardous Waste collection day for the Town of West Hartford is scheduled for September 25th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Public Works Garage, 25 Brixton Street (Oakwood Avenue Ext. off New Park Avenue). Check the MDC website for additional dates and places

What to bring from the garage: Gasoline, antifreeze, oil-based paint, turpentine, paint-stripper, household batteries, and transmission fluid

What to bring from the kitchen: Ammonia, floor care products, drain cleaners, disinfectants, oven cleaners, polishes, and unfinished aerosols.

What to bring from the yard and hobbies: Brake fluids, glues, insecticides, cleaning solvents, pool chemicals, moth balls, epoxy products, artist’s paints.

WHAT NOT TO BRING: Empty containers, latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, tires, wastes from any business, biological waste, medicines/drugs, asbestos, waste oil, and old car batteries!!!

WHERE NOT TO TAKE HAZARDOUS WASTE: DO NOT DROP OFF ANY TYPE OF HAZARDOUS WASTE AT WEST HARTFORD FIRE STATIONS. THE ONLY COLLECTION POINT IS AT THE PUBLIC WORKS GARAGE ON SEPTEMBER 27th.
