Annual Townwide Street Sweeping Progress Report

(Thursday, April 22, 2008)

The Public Works Department began its annual town-wide street sweeping program on Monday, March 24th.  Two crews began sweeping at the north end of Town at the Bloomfield town line between Mountain Road and Prospect Avenue.

Sweeping crews have now completed sweeping the areas from the Bloomfield town line south to Sedgwick Road and Park Road.  Crews are currently working in the area between Sedgwick Road and the New Britain Avenue.  Once this area is completed, crews will move into the area between the New Britain Avenue and the Newington Town line.  Once this area is completed, the area from Mountain Road west to the Farmington town line will be swept, beginning in the area between the Bloomfield town line and Albany Avenue and proceeding south for the length of Mountain Road.

Residents in these areas are encouraged to rake the sand off their roadside areas so that the sweepers can collect it.  Residents are asked to please help the sweeping crews by not making large piles of sand, but instead spreading them out along the gutter of the street.  When the sweeper encounters large piles of sand and debris, it often is forced to go around and leave it.  Also, please do not sweep leaves or yard waste other debris besides sand into the gutter.  Sweeping crews will skip locations where these items have been swept into the gutter.  If you have pieces of broken curbing on your lawn, please contact the public works department at 561-8100 and the Public Works Department will collect these items separately.

The sweeping of all Town streets is expected to be completed in about six weeks (between May 5th and May 10th), depending on weather conditions.  Once all Town streets have been swept once, the Department will go back and sweep high traffic streets and streets in the Town’s commercial areas on a weekly basis through the summer and fall until the start of the leaf collection program.
